JAM | Alfaaz

Just-A-Minute or JAM as it is popularly abbreviated, is the ultimate test of one's wit, presence of mind and above all the control of the mind over the mouth. Can you make it through sixty seconds of non-stop talking without hesitation, repetition, or deviation? Or will the sheer pressure make you crumble and have your competitors pounce on you in an instant?

The rules:

1. The JAM master is god. No questions or arguments once the final decision has been made

2. To object, slam the table and say "JAM". The JAM master decides when you are allowed to put forth your objection

3. You get a penalty if the competition objects on any of the following counts:
a. You object out of turn
b. You stutter, stammer, and generally indulge in "time-wasting tactics". These include efforts to buy time like interspersing your talk with "uhh", "aah" etc...
c. Early start and late start
d. Speaking too fast or too slow
e. Grammatical errors
f. Undue stress on words, undue emphasis in the sentences
g. Repetition of a previously used idea
h. Not following the "random rules" as set by the JAM master. For example, the most popular random rule was "Praise Guntas before objecting". If you forget to do so or the JAM master thinks that the praise was not good enough, you will not be allowed to object and lose points for an incorrect/bad objection

4. The total time is sixty seconds, inclusive of all the time that all the speakers in a given round are allowed to speak

5. Points are given in the following manner:
a. Positive points for every second that you speak
b. Positive points for every correct objection
c. Negative points for every incorrect objection
d. Bonus points for being the last speaker

6. The winner is the person with the maximum number of points at the end of the round.

Tata Nano Circuit

Introduction: A skill based driving event for all you out there. Drive the Tata Nano through a maze of a track with your team without messing up anywhere and come out victorious!! The obstacles you knock over and the parking’s, turnings that you fault at shall result in you losing points.
Problem Statement: Drive the Nano through the 3 basic tasks along with you team of Three without knocking over the bottles, traffic cones and other obstacles in your way.

There’d be 3 basic tests:
1. Hands On the Wheel: A maneuvering skills based test. Drive the car through the S bends in minimal time and without knocking over the cones.
2. Parking Test: Reverse park the car into the parking slot drawn on the field. Any tyre out, you lose points. At the parking test, switch off the car and change drivers.
3. S Bends: Experience the 4mt turning radius of the Wonder car on these S bends. Whirl your way around these and park smack in the middle of the track. Remember, you will be judged on the positioning of the car. The final team member now gets to drive the vehicle
4. Ground Clearance Test: Tackle the final S bend and position the car such that the car passes over the cans without crushing any of the cans. Remember those who do crush the cans, shall be assigned the task of re-inflating them!!
5. Finally reverse park the car back into the start point and get your scores tallied.
Specifications: 1. There shall be 3 team members.
2. Each team member should have a driving license.
3. Incase they do not, they are allowed to be part of the team but cannot drive during the event. In this case, the car needs to be switched off, and restarted after a 10 second wait period to allow the same driver to continue.
4. Since we don’t want any overspeeding on the track, we have set a range of timimgs for the teams. For eg if the specified time is 4’30’’ then teams are allowed to complete the track in between 4’ and 5’.
• If More than 5’ , then a penalty of -1 point for every second shall be levied.
• If less than 4’ , then a penalty of -5 points per second shall be levied.

RULES FOR THE EVENT

All teams were given a tally of 300 points before the start of the event.
The track was divided into 4 parts:
1. Avoiding Obstacles
The car had to navigate through a line of obstacles by manoeuvring around bottles kept on the track. For every bottle knocked over it cost the team 15 points.
At the end of the obstacle course the driver had to park the vehicle in a designated area, within the boundary lines and change places with one of the passengers.

2. 4mt Turning Radius and Ground Clearance
The new driver had to take the vehicle out of the parking and go around the 4.8mt turning that was given, without going out of the track as that entailed minus(-5) points every time the vehicles tires moved out.
The car had to pass over empty cans that were placed within a marked area without knocking any of them over. Every can knocked over entailed -10 points. After this Zone the drivers needed to change over to the third team member.

3. 4mt Turning Radius and Reverse Park
Another 4mt turning radius was included into the track to test the driving skill followed by 50mts of straight road. This was followed by a Left Reverse Park into a designated area at the start box. Pointed were deducted on the basis of the number of tires out of the box. For each tyre 10 pointes were deducted.

To keep the event safe for both the participants and the spectators, there was a time range to complete the event decided.
The Course needed to be navigated through between 300-350 seconds. If the timing was:
• Below 240 seconds then for every second -5 points
• Above 300 seconds then -1 for each second.

Points were also deducted for the following:
• If speeds exceeded 20-25kmph, 20 points deducted.
• False starts -10 points
• Knocking over obstacles -10 points.
